The day of judgment arrives, and the Lord kills the two sons of Eli as well as the son’s daughter-in-law who is in labor on hearing the news. The grandson of Eli, a man whose name means “Where is the glory?” was named Ichabod. It is a reminder that God’s call must take precedence over our own agendas.

The result is that his two sons are killed in battle and the Ark of the Covenant is taken by the Philistines. Eli dies of a broken neck when he hears the news.

Eli, the man who raised Samuel, is a man of great spiritual wisdom. He understands that God’s call for Samuel meant a great deal more than just another day in the priesthood and court of Israel.
Rather than avoiding the call of God, he takes the initiative to ask Samuel what God said to him. And even though he knows that the message must be bad news, he presses Samuel to tell him all of it.
Unlike many religious people, Eli was not afraid of being unpopular. He understood that the daily and often mundane discipline of prayer is what produces the fruit. To avoid this work is to miss out on true Christian life. And, like any other discipline, it must be cultivated and cultivated well. A life of prayer is not easy, but it is worth it.
